If the above point alone doesn't make things difficult enough, there isn't -- and never was -- a definitive design for a Dalek. Nor was there ever a definitive colour scheme (even for Daleks on the same side in the same story!). Oh and finally, there are those practical problems inherent in scratch building several of the parts involved (not least the dome) which can make the whole endeavour a bit of a nightmare.
So if you have a hour or two to spare and fancied building a 1/4 scale replica of one of the deadliest foes of a certain Timelord, then think again and have a nice cup of tea.
